1. Complete six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor.
2. Complete fifty (50) hours of practice with a driver over 25 years of age that has a valid California drivers license. Ten (10) of the fifty hours of practice must be night driving.
3. Hold their permit for a minimum of six months (or until they are 18 years old.)
4. Under no circumstances can a student drive alone with only a permit!!!
To obtain a provisional permit you must be at least 15 1/2 years old.
Must complete a California State Approved Driver’s Education Course (Online or Classroom) - You can start either course at any age but it’s better to wait until you are 15 years old but must be at least 15 1/2 to take the written permit test. You will be issued a Certificate of Completion when you have successfully completed the course. An original Completion Certificate must be presented to the DMV when taking your test.

Provide your social security number
Obtain your parents’ or guardians’ signatures
Present an acceptable birth date/legal presence document (Passport). This needs to be an original, copies will not be accepted.
Bring 2 Forms of Proof of California Residency.
Pay the required application fee ($41.00 current price)
Pass an eye exam
Have your picture taken
Give a thumb print
Pass a written exam permit test - If you incorrectly answer 9 or more questions (46 total questions) on the exam, you must wait 7 days before retaking the written exam. You have 3 chances to pass the test.
Hold your permit for a minimum of 6 months.

In California, you have three attempts to pass the driving test within 12 months of paying the initial application fee. If you fail the road test, you must wait 14 days (not including the day of the failure) to retake it and pay a retest fee for each subsequent attempt.
To pass the road test portion you must make no more than 30 errors and no critical driving errors, which will result in an automatic failure.
While parallel parking isn’t explicitly required in California DMV driving test, you will be expected to demonstrate your ability to pull up to a curb and reverse in a straight line for a few car lengths.
